Research and Clinical Interests
My research interests in the past involved investigating the language of therapy as well as relationships. At present I teach graduate and undergraduate courses, and supervise practicum year round. I focus my research and development interests on practicum training and find this a dynamic area that is filled with changing ideas, replacing the apprentice-model with theories about training in eclecticism and evidence-based treatments. The challenge becomes providing an array of knowledge areas while still giving students a strong base of therapeutic skills. The most exciting aspect of supervision for me is to gain more understanding about how to facilitate students' self-awareness. Attention to and understanding of personal thoughts, feelings, and values gives students an experience that translates into accurate empathy for clients, and is an essential ingredient in becoming a professional practitioner.
